Billie Eilish - Happier Than Ever

Diverging into experimental, Billie comes back with a more focused and mature experience on Happier Than Ever.

Billie Eilish is the 19 year old singer and songwriter that immensely rose to fame with her ground breaking pop debut "When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?". Before we got this sophomore record we were introduced to a bunch of singles. Some of them were just random singles but the majority of them ended up in HTE. The album starts with Getting Older. A song that reflects on everything this album presents to you: growth as a person and as a musician and throughout the album, we can see that the ideas are more structured and can easy show Billie's growth from the electropop sound of her debut. I Didnt Change My Number is a pretty funny track as well with cool production. Just from the beginning of the record, the sound that Billie is trying to diverge to is definitely touching the experimental vibes a little bit but... it gets even more experimental. Billie Bossa Nova is a modern Bossa Nova song made by Billie with one of the catchier hooks on the record and its a good try because she fits into the origins of the genre. my future is the first dud and seriously makes me so confused. Wasn't this song released EXACTLY a year ago already? Its pretty sleepy and the beat is meh and boring. A boring and uninteresting track overall. Oxytocin and GOLDWING are the tracks that make this record more experimental. Oxytocin has a theme that could have been easily throwed into her debut but its still a decent track overall. Not that good tho. GOLDWING in the other hand should have been way longer. The track doesn't really have time to build but if it was a little bit longer, this would be top 3 of the album undoubtedly. Lost Cause is the controversial queerbating track that is just a hell of a snooze fest. The build up is boring and the production is sleepy af for a track as "shaky" as it is. Halley´s Comet is cool, nothing really different from her normal sound but its still well received. Not My Responsibility is a really interesting interlude but feels kinda empty in the middle of the record but one thing I like about it being in the middle of the record is that literally everything that came after it (and maybe after OverHeated) is just bangers. OverHeated is a faster song but its really repetitive and that's what makes it boring tbh. Everybody Dies is soft and calm but the songwriting is easily some of the best on the record. Your Power is a cool single, shouldn't have been the lead single but it was fine. NDA sounds so much better with the album. When it was released, the track showed a different side of Billie that didn't match the soft vibe of Your Power and Lost Cause but its just so good. The production on here is amazing and FINNEAS makes sure every detail about it is perfect. And then the transition to Therefore I Am. I literally got my head bobbing. Such a good track. Transition from a track to another like that was gold. Therefore I Am is one of her best songs. The writing is kinda clunky but the performance is stunning. Good production as well from FINNEAS. Happier Than Ever. What can I say? Its track of the year contender and you should check out my review on it. Perfect writing and the production switch was needed to make a stunning track all around. Big banger. And then Male Fantasy comes on. Not a game changer and it kinda sounds like something off the new music from Clairo and Phoebe Bridgers but with a slight twist of Billie into it.

The album is good but honestly, the debut was less focused but better. There almost all songs had a purpose to create a story and here there are some snoozers. What it positively shows is that Billie is growing as an artist and she will probably make a 9 or a 10 sooner :)
